The recall encompasses Explorers spanning the model years 2011 through 2019.

Documents unveiled on Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that the clips securing the trim, which covers the roof supports near the windshield, may become dislodged.

In the event of detachment, the trim component has the propensity to disengage and escalate the likelihood of a vehicular collision.

This recall follows an inquiry initiated by U.S. regulators in January, prompted by 164 consumer complaints. Canadian regulators also probed the matter.

The documents suggest that initially, Ford opted against a recall, citing the negligible mass of the implicated part. However, the company reversed its decision after U.S. regulators determined the issue to be a safety menace.

Ford conveyed in a statement on Wednesday that it anticipates only 5% of the recalled Explorers to be susceptible to this problem. Owners are urged to liaise with dealers for an examination once the requisite parts are available.

According to the documents, Ford is cognizant of 568 consumer complaints and over 14,000 warranty reports asserting the absence or detachment of the parts. Ford maintains it has no knowledge of any accidents or injuries attributable to this issue.

Dealers will scrutinize the trim components to ensure the clips are securely fastened and will apply adhesive to fortify their stability.
