Bugatti Type 39 Sports wins Best of Show award in Conservation category
Monterey, California – Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2024 took a new direction when judges honored a 1934 Bugatti Type 39 Sports as Best of Show. This is the first time the prestigious award has been given in the Conservation category, which places importance on originality and patina.

The Conservation category is for cars that proudly show off the scratches and chips that have come with their age. This year, the 90-year-old Bugatti beat vehicles that were presented after expensive restoration processes. This proves that the collector community is now moving towards originality.

The story of the Bugatti Type 39 is nothing less than a movie script. It was driven by legendary drivers such as René Dreyfus and Robert Benoist and notably won the Algerian Grand Prix. Later, the model was included in the collection of King Leopold III of Belgium, further increasing its historical value.

This victory has once again underlined the importance of originality and history at Pebble Beach, and the Bugatti Type 39 Sports has once again received the respect it deserves for its royal status.

One of Bugatti's historic racers, the Type 59 Sports, is once again in the spotlight, and this time it has a connection with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This magnificent car recently achieved a new milestone by winning the Best of Show award, making it the first time a European owner has won this prestigious honor.

The story of the Type 59 Sports begins with a royal connection. The car was specially painted from blue to black, the king's favorite colour. Although no concrete information is available about its condition during the king's ownership, it is certain that in 1959 the car moved to Belgium with the king and his family. It was sold in 1967 and has passed through several owners since then, retaining its originality.

The car is now owned by Fritz Burkard of Switzerland, whose Bugatti won Best of Show when it was entered at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as a representative of Zug. This is a major achievement for Bugatti, as it is now tied with Mercedes-Benz for the most Best of Show awards at Pebble Beach, with both brands having ten wins each.

Other cars nominated for this year’s Best of Show award were a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Souchick Fastback Coupe from the Czech Republic, a 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve LeBaron Sport Phaeton from Ohio, and a 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero Bertone from California. All of these cars were unique and significant in their respective categories, but the Bugatti Type 59 Sports took top honors, beating out this year’s competition.

Bugatti’s stunning comeback once again proves that the brand is at the forefront of class and excellence.
